My psychiatry posting was a very enriching and eye-opening experience. Before this posting, I had a limited understanding of mental health disorders and often underestimated the importance of psychiatry as a clinical branch. During this rotation, I learned that psychiatry is not only about treating illnesses but also about understanding human behaviour, emotions, and social factors, which play a major role in patient care.

I was exposed to common psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and somatoform disorders. I learned how to take a detailed psychiatric history, perform a mental status examination, assess suicidal risk, and understand the importance of empathy and good communication in managing patients. Observing patient interviews and counselling sessions helped me realise how crucial listening skills and patience are in psychiatry.

This posting also helped me reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. I understood that psychiatric disorders are medical conditions like any other illness and require proper diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up. I also learned about various treatment modalities, including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy.

As a future doctor, this posting has been extremely useful because mental health issues are commonly encountered in all branches of medicine. Even if I do not choose psychiatry as my specialisation, the knowledge gained here will definitely help me in managing patients holistically.

Regarding psychiatry as a future branch, I now see it as a very meaningful and rewarding speciality. It offers good work-life balance, intellectual satisfaction, and the opportunity to make a significant difference in patients’ lives. With increasing awareness about mental health, the scope of psychiatry is expanding rapidly in India and worldwide. It is a branch with growing demand and great future potential.

Overall, my psychiatry posting was informative, interesting, and impactful, and it has changed my perspective positively towards mental health and psychiatry as a career option.
